Turner’s art in Dordrecht - Feb. 19, 2026

It is a homecoming of great significance: the famous painting Dort, or Dordrecht: The Dort Packet-Boat from Rotterdam Becalmed (1818) by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) is back in Dordrecht in Spring 2026 to the city that it portrays.

Turner in Dordrecht

Painting Dort or Dordrecht by Joseph Mallord William Turner

The world-renowned British painter first visited Dordrecht in 1817 and was moved by the play of light on the water, the bustling harbour life, and the stillness of the atmosphere. These impressions became the foundation for this painting, which now – more than two centuries later – comes for the first time to the place where Turner found his inspiration. Thanks to a collaboration with the Yale Center for British Art (USA),this masterpiece is shown alongside other works by Turner from the YCBA.

Turner in the Netherlands

Turner’s work is rare in the Netherlands. Apart from Whalley Bridge and Abbey (long-term loan to Dordrecht) and a single painting at Museum de Fundatie, there are no other paintings by the British master in Dutch collections. The YCBA holds the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. This includes exceptional works by Turner, ranging from early Romantic river landscapes to the radically abstract seascapes of his final years.

Painter of water and light

Painting Wreckers by Joseph Mallord William Turner

The exhibition presents Turner as the ultimate painter of water. The irresistible interplay of water and light was for Turner an inexhaustible source of artistic inspiration. He captured the beauty of picturesque rivers and confronts us with the overwhelming power of the sea. As a painter of modern life during the Industrial Revolution, Turner depicted the beauty and potential as well as the dangers of water: water as both friend and foe. He was constantly aware of humanity’s vulnerable position in the face of nature’s might.

Dort takes centre stage

Dort takes center stage in the exhibition, complemented by other works from the Paul Mellon Collection at the YCBA – including the impressive Wreckers – and works from the Dordrechts Museum’s own collection. Naturally, Aelbert Cuyp is also featured, as Turner’s great source of inspiration.
