Rotterdam, a popular destination for international visitors

With its sparkling skyscrapers, impressive port, hip restaurants and food markets, renowned museums, and awesome festivals, Rotterdam is considered to be Holland’s most modern and diverse city. Add to that the many extraordinary attractions and city tours – by bike, bus, boat or on foot – and you understand why Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel voted Rotterdam as one of the top ten must visit cities of the world in 2016. Rotterdam, a city to discover!

A young and dynamic metropolis

In the city that was mostly destroyed in 1940, you’ll find a patchwork of architectural styles from this and the previous century. The highlights are, among others, the Cube Houses, Rotterdam Central Station, De Rotterdam and the Markthal. The roof of the Markthal is shaped by an arch and the inside bears the biggest artwork in the Netherlands, The Horn of Plenty.

Water and Port

Rotterdam as a port city is inextricably linked to the Maas River. There are many ways to explore and experience all that the river and the port have to offer. Several buildings still recall an era when European passengers departed from this spot by steamship, bound for America. One example is the Cruise Terminal, while another is the famous Hotel New York, nowadays a popular and lively spot. Also discover the ss Rotterdam, the former flagship of the Holland America Line that has been permanently moored since 2010 on the quay in the south-centre of Rotterdam; Katendrecht.

And Much More

The many exhibitions in top museums like Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Kunsthal Rotterdam are also worth a visit. Just like the internationally acclaimed festivals such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the North Sea Jazz Festival. Those who love shopping can also enjoy themselves to their hearts’ content in Rotterdam. Fans of food are also amply catered for and can choose from Michelin-starred restaurants to street food.
