The family resort of Kijkduin
Dreamy beaches in Kijkduin
Between Scheveningen and Kijkduin lies the Zuiderstrand, with no streets running alongside it, which makes it much pleasanter and quieter as a result. You can spend a relaxing day at the beach there with children, and quench your hunger and thirst in one of the beach bars in the meantime. You'll also find good restaurants on the boulevard at Kijkduin, where you'll be able to indulge your appetite with a view of the sea and the beach. South of the boulevard, the beach transforms into a lagoon landscape. The 'Sand Motor', a peninsula in the North Sea, was erected there a few years ago. The sand now spreads with the current and protects the coast from floods. An additional positive effect: it has created a lagoon which offers perfect conditions for kite surfers. Both nudists and dog lovers are well catered for around the Sand Motor (four-legged friends can run around there all year round).
What is there to do in Kijkduin?
Kijkduin is the lovely peaceful resort of The Hague. The Hague, the headquarters of the Dutch government and the royal palace, is always worth a visit. Bus 24 will get you into the historic center in half an hour.
If the sun isn't shining, or you feel like moving a little, Kijkduin also invites you to go for a walk or bicycle ride. You'll find lovely routes through the Haagse Duinen, but also along the cozy boulevard. And if you're already there, you can settle down in one of the terrace cafes with a view of the sea.
Kijkduin: hotspot for sports enthusiasts
As stated above, the Sand Motor lagoon attracts countless kite surfers on windy days. However, the nearby North Sea also offers excellent conditions for water sports such as kite surfing and windsurfing, but also sailing and catamaran sailing. In Kijkduin, you can also try your hand at even more types of sport - even the kinds you'd never have imagined seeing near the North Sea beach; the Uithof, only 4 km away from the beach, is Europe's largest indoor sports center, where you can go skiing, ice skating, go-karting and play laser quest games. If you fancy something a little tamer, you can cross the great and wonderful dune landscape on foot or by bicycle. Even the 570 km long, Dutch coastal route leads to the resort of Kijkduin. Incidentally, there's also a 9-hole golf course, Golf Ockenburgh, in Kijkduin on Wijndaelerweg 125.
Children are welcome!
For the kids, there's the 'Atlantis Play Boat'. They'll also definitely find a visit to the 'viewing tower', the former lighthouse of Kijkduin, a worthwhile experience. And finally, there's 'Hemels Gewelf' (Celestial Vault), an enormous elliptical crater which makes the sky seem like a giant arch, and also offers a marvelous view of the beach and the sea. Not far from the Atlantic Hotel, directly located by the beach, the 'Jutterskeet' is hidden between the dunes. In the hut, which is open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, children can gaze in wonder at the flotsam and jetsam which 'Ome Jan' and his helpers have fished out of the sea.
Where can you have something good to eat?
Would you like to lunch at midday or dine in the evening with a view of the sea? Then you'll find different beach pavilions for every taste in Kijkduin. For example, there's Habana Beach (address: Zuiderstrand 15/16), where you can order delicious dishes such as fish or pizza. At Beachclub Titus (address: Zuiderstrand 12), you can enjoy marvelous fish and grill dishes.
Trip destinations in the area surrounding Kijkduin
As Kijkduin is a district of the Hague, it goes without saying that a trip into the historic city is on offer. Another wonderful nearby city is Delft, which is always worth a day trip, with its 17th century town hall, impressive churches and the world famous Delft Blue crockery. Would you rather stay by the coast and enjoy the beach? Scheveningen is the somewhat livelier beach section of the Hague. In the trendy beach clubs (e.g. at Zwarte Pad), both residents and tourists gather on warm summer nights. A little further north of Scheveningen, there's the resort of Noordwijk, which not only borders the North Sea, but the Dutch tulip region as well.
Location and getting to Kijkduin
If you aren't traveling by car, then there's nothing to worry about; from Schiphol Airport, you can get to the Hague's central station with the Intercity in only half an hour, and from there, the bus will take you to the Kijkduin district of the Hague. If you're coming by car, then there are even free parking lots in some parts of Kijkduin (Zandvoortselaan and Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan - with reservation).
