Middachten’s fragrant rose gardens and rare trees

Formal gardens play an important role in Dutch country house tradition, and Middachten Estate is no exception. Its striking gardens present visitors with the opportunity to explore the history of landscaping. With its design unchanged for centuries, the lawns, flowerbeds, topiary and sculptures all form a unified whole with the water and the house. Dotted around are trees that are rarely seen in Holland: a ginkgo tree, a 150-year-old Cedar of Lebanon and a rare weeping chestnut among them. And in the summer, the rose garden – and its 60 varieties of shrub roses and climbers – fills the grounds with their luscious scent. In July and August, tea is served at the Orangery, completing a summer day’s perfection. And for those loving the place so much that they can’t face leaving: three rooms on the estate are being let for bed-and-breakfast stays.

Historic estate

Middachten was first recorded in 1190. Later, in the early 14th century, it is mentioned again in combination with Everardus van Middachten – progenitor of all later inhabitants of the house. Today’s resident is Count zu Ortenburg. Middachten is still a working estate with agricultural land, farms and woods.
