Experience Zwolle like a local
Like everyone from the East Netherlands region, the people of Zwolle are proud of their own language and culture. Down-to-earth Zwolle locals live by the maxim "Just act normal, that's strange enough". In this city, everything revolves around warmth and hospitality. Simple and uncomplicated and where the welcomes are genuine. Whatever your reason for visiting, you will immediately feel at home in this warm, hospitable environment. Know what else Zwolle people are proud of? The city's long history is still quite tangible as you stroll through its streets. There are a number of must-see places to visit when in Zwolle.
From Sassenpoort to Peperbus
Take a tour of the city centre and walk past the Sassenpoort, a remnant of Zwolle's ancient city wall. The centuries-old Peperbus tower is part of the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Basilica and, at a height of 75 metres, it’s an unmissable landmark. Another real eye-catcher is the beautiful Van der Velde in de Broeren bookshop, located in a monumental church building with a rich history. Other must-sees in Zwolle include the Museum de Fundatie and the ANNO city museum. There’s plenty of history to sample in the city.
As a Hanseatic city, that history is still very much part of Zwolle. The trading centre of Zwolle flourished in the shadow of the imposing Grote Kerk, the church founded in 765 by the missionaries Lebuinus and Marcellinus. This area, later known as the Grote Markt, became a lively hub of trade and culture. With city rights granted in 1230, Zwolle quickly grew into a powerful city, strategically located on a busy trade route. Joining the German Hanseatic League in 1407 ushered in a 'Golden Age'. History and mystery still permeate the city – from medieval buildings to the stories of the Modern Devotion religious movement.
City of students and Blue Fingers
In addition to its rich history, there are some other interesting facts that make Zwolle what it is. For instance, Zwolle is a true student city, where Johan Cele founded the world's first secondary school in the 15th century! Zwolle attracted students from all over the world. People from Zwolle are colloquially known as Blauwvingers (Blue Fingers). According to legend, this name came about when they sold their damaged, old church bells to the people of Kampen. When the people of Zwolle received their payment – a cart full of copper coins – they literally got blue fingers counting them. It's a lasting reminder of the old rivalry between the two cities.

Hidden gardens & art venues
Assendorp is one of Zwolle’s trendiest neighbourhoods The streets are bustling with people shopping, walking or drinking coffee at inviting pavement cafés. On sunny days, residents enjoy a drink in front of their houses and children play on the pavement. The neighbourhood offers a range of cafés, restaurants and shops, from artisanal bakeries to trendy boutiques. You'll find everything you need, from trendy coffee bars to atmospheric eateries. Assendorperplein is the vibrant heart of the neighbourhood and a regular venue for events.
Assendorp: from working class to gentrification
Assendorp has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. It was originally built as a working-class neighbourhood for railway and factory workers and this is reflected in the architecture. The characteristic brick workers’ houses give the neighbourhood an authentic, nostalgic feel. The streets exude history and momentarily transport you back in time. In recent decades, Assendorp has been transformed from a simple working-class neighbourhood into a more gentrified one, where historical charm meets modern elements. Old houses have been renovated and streets renewed, giving the neighbourhood a unique balance between past and present.
What activities does this neighbourhood offer? We previously mentioned Assendorperplein as the vibrant heart of Assendorp. It’s where life is celebrated! Enjoy festivals such as beer festivals, the Sinterklaas parade and King's Day. Every second Sunday of the month, the bandstand on the square holds a musical event. Explore the street art in Assendorp by following a 7 km walking route past 18 murals ranging from impressive works of art to small hidden gems. The route takes about two hours on foot.
