Heading out on the water in the Netherlands: 7 quiet regions

Enjoy the best waters, at your own pace

From the water, the Netherlands offers a different experience. Not rushed or sporty, but calm and relaxed as the landscape slowly passes you by. From canoeing through quiet nature reserves to sailing across vast lakes, you'll find places where water, nature and small towns come together all over the country. For those who like comfort, space and a relaxed travel pace, the Netherlands offers a surprising number of options. Discover 7 special regions where water sports are mainly about slowing down, having fun and staying longer.

1. Sailing the Frisian lakes

For sailing enthusiasts, the Frisian lakes are perhaps the most relaxing water sports region in the Netherlands. As you glide peacefully across the water, small villages, historical bridges and vast reed beds alternate along the way. The horizon here seems endless and the lapping of the water automatically sets the pace of your day. Especially in the off-season, there is a welcome sense of calm here.

Stay for a few days in places like Sneek or Sloten and combine boating with local restaurants and small waterfront terraces. Thanks to good train connections, both within the Netherlands and internationally, you can travel to Friesland easily and sustainably. Even if you don’t own a boat, there are plenty of opportunities to hire a sloop or sailboat for a relaxing trip.

2. Canoeing in the Weerribben-Wieden

Canoeing past windmills and reed beds in National Park Weerribben-Wieden

National Park Weerribben-Wieden in Overijssel is one of the quietest places in the Netherlands. Narrow waterways take you past reed beds, wooden bridges and small islands, with the only sound coming from birds and whisper-quiet electric cruise boats. Canoeing here almost feels like sailing through a living nature documentary, in the middle of a landscape that seems largely untouched.

Pause for a while in Giethoorn or the hamlet of Dwarsgracht to have some lunch on the waterfront. And those who stay just a little longer will discover the most peaceful spots and hidden gems just outside the well-known places. For an overnight stay, there are small-scale lodges or B&Bs right on the cruising routes, allowing you to hit the water straight away in the morning.

3. Cruising along the floodplains of Gelderland

Gelderland's major rivers are the perfect place for a relaxed form of water sports combining nature and small cities. Along the IJssel and Waal, you cruise through open floodplains with a landscape of old brickworks, green banks and historic towns in the distance. You will find that early morning in particular, there is an almost 'hushed' atmosphere over the water in the Netherlands.

Combine your time on board with overnight stays in cities such as Doesburg or Zaltbommel. On the way, you'll find small marinas and restaurants serving local produce. Thanks to its flat terrain, this region is also ideal for alternating boat trips with gentle bike rides along the river.

4. Electric cruise boats in Lauwersmeer National Park

On the border of Groningen and Friesland lies Lauwersmeer National Park, an area dominated by water, birds and silence. With a whisper-quiet electric cruise boat, you sail almost silently past wide reed beds and through open water sections. Especially during sunset, the landscape constantly changes colour as large flocks of birds fly over in the direction of the Wadden Sea.

In villages around Lauwersmeer, you'll find small-scale accommodations overlooking the water. Lauwersoog is a good starting point for a multi-day stay in which nature and peace take centre stage. Due to the limited crowds, the area feels surprisingly relaxed even in the summer.

5. Paddle boarding past historic towns

Paddle boarding becomes a whole new experience when you do it in historic Dutch cities. In places like Haarlem or Amersfoort you paddle quietly past old façades, low bridges and small waterfront terraces. The pace is slow and this is precisely why you can see details that are easily missed from the street.

Many routes start directly from the city centre, making it easy to combine paddle boarding with having some lunch or visiting a museum. It’s best to choose an early morning trip, when the water is still as smooth as a mirror. And thanks to the calm inland waters, less experienced paddle boarders will also enjoy taking to the water here.

6. Peace and quiet and space in Flevoland

In the province of Flevoland you can experience how special new land can feel from the water. Around the Oostvaardersplassen and National Park Nieuw Land, the Nieuw Land Experience organises guided boat trips during which you'll discover this impressive marshland – full of Konik horses, Heck cattle and white-tailed eagles – by boat. The area itself is not freely accessible, but it's precisely this organised approach that makes the experience extra special.

Stay overnight right by the water at a small harbour or nature cottage and explore the region over several days. Especially for travellers who love silence and modern landscapes, Flevoland offers a surprising water sports experience. Thanks to good train connections, you can also easily reach the region without a car.

7. Experience Noordwijk from the water

Noordwijk shows that water sports on the coast is not necessarily synonym with crowded or over-commercialised. Outside the summer months, there is a relaxed atmosphere here where beach, dunes and water blend together effortlessly. Quiet paddle boarding or kayak trips along the coast offer a completely different view of this well-known seaside resort.

Combine a stay by the sea with walks through the dunes or cycle trips to the bulb region. Many hotels are geared specifically towards comfort and relaxation away from the big crowds. As a result, your stay in Noordwijk will feel like a relaxing wellness destination rather than a classic beach holiday.
