Alkmaar seen from the water

Like many old cities in Holland, Alkmaar is a real ‘canal town’. In the past these canals were used as waterways, as a sewer system and to defend the city, but today they are mainly decorative. Alkmaar is a perfect place for a lovely boat tour on the canals, allowing you to see the city from a different perspective.

  • Experience Alkmaar in the traditional way: from the water.
  • Embark on an unforgettable cruise through the canals.
  • Discover the city without a guide.

Alkmaar at its best!

During a 45 minute tour, you will discover what Alkmaar used to be like and what it has become. In a Giethoornse punter, a very low barge, you will explore the canals, passing underneath the many little bridges and discovering many historic places. As you will see, Alkmaar is at its best seen from the water!

Zelf varen

During the tour a guide will tell you all you want to know. If you would prefer to explore the canals on your own, there are several businesses where you can rent a smaller boat to go your own way. Contact the local tourist office (VVV) for more information.
