What makes Middelburg such a special part of Dutch history? The city was known as a major trading centre during the Dutch Era. International goods made their way into Europe from here. You can still see that history around the Market Square, at the Gothic town hall and in the Abbey complex.

Trade, history and recovery

We’ll explain how the city was badly damaged during the Second World War but chose to rebuild carefully. There was no radical modernisation as with Rotterdam, but restoration. The historic character was restored brick by brick. This didn't result in an open-air museum, but instead in a vibrant city with a strong sense of continuity.

We’ll also share practical tips for your visit: wander through the 17th-century Kuiperspoort, discover picturesque Reigerstraatje, climb the Lange Jan abbey tower, and combine your city trip with Walcheren's beaches or a visit to Oosterschelde National Park.
