From the Bulb Region to Kings Day

What makes spring so special in the Netherlands? First of all, there is the landscape. Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths colour the land in glorious brushstrokes of red, yellow and purple in areas such as the Bulb Region (Bollenstreek). Cherry and fruit trees bloom in parks and orchards, while lambs frolicking in the meadows herald the arrival of the new season. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the Dutch outdoors by bike or on foot.

Spring is also the start of the festival season. Paaspop, one of the country's most famous music festivals, takes place during the spring. Restaurant terraces fill up, markets appear in town squares, and outdoor events are held in cities across the country. From big cities to smaller historical towns, there is an energetic, relaxed atmosphere throughout the Netherlands.

One of April's highlights is King's Day, when the Netherlands turns orange in honour of King Willem-Alexander's birthday. Flea markets, music performances and street parties combine to create a unique national celebration that attracts visitors from all over the world. The evening before, known as King's Night, sees many cities bustling with celebrations until well into the night.

There are also loads of family-friendly activities in the spring. Visit a farm, explore a play forest or go for a refreshing walk along the beautiful Dutch coast. Spring is a great time to visit national parks such as De Maasduinen or De Hoge Veluwe for wildlife spotting or simply to enjoy the fresh air and nature in bloom.
