In the theme year “Rembrandt and the Golden Age 2019”, the Mauritshuis museum will show a retrospective exhibition of one of Rembrandt’s most versatile students: Nicolaes Maes (1634-1693). Over 30 works illustrate his varied oeuvre consisting of historical pieces, biblical and domestic scenes, and portraits.

  • Currently at the Mauritshuis: the multifaceted oeuvre of Nicolaes Maes.
  • Famous for his typical ‘domestic scenes’ and stunning portraits.
  • First retrospective exhibition with works on loan from Europe and the United States.

Everyday scenes

Old women sewing, young mothers and housemaids returning from market: Maes was a master at portraying domestic scenes. The exhibition also devotes attention to one of his most beloved subjects, ‘the eavesdropper’. With his intimate genre paintings, Nicolaes Maes inspired other famous 17th-century painters like Pieter de Hooch and Johannes Vermeer.

Rembrandt’s student

Maes’ work clearly shows Rembrandt’s influence in the lifelike representation of human gestures and facial expressions. His earlier biblical works were ascribed to Rembrandt for a long time. Here, we recognize the powerful style, warm colors and strong interplay of light and dark as taught by his master.

Rich portraits

Maes achieved his greatest success as a portrait painter. At the exhibition, you will come face to face with the elegant Portrait of a Boy as a Hunter and his sister, Portrait of a Girl with a Deer. Both wear luxurious, colorful costumes and are shown standing in highly detailed fantasy landscapes.
